Battery-Free Smart Locks for Port Terminals: Deployment Q&A

Crane electrical rooms and gate equipment rooms still run on shared mechanical keys at many terminals. This Q&A walks through a battery-free deployment with Passive and Kinetic Locks.

Battery-Free Smart Locks for Port Terminals: Deployment Q&A

Crane electrical rooms and gate equipment rooms sit at the heart of terminal operations, yet many still run on mechanical keys passed between shifts and contractors. We asked how battery-free smart locks for port terminals would be deployed in these two spaces.

Q: Why are these rooms a key-control problem?

A: The ISPS Code requires port facilities to apply access and area control to keep unauthorized people out of the port, as the Port of Helsinki explains. Shared keys make it hard to show who entered a crane house or gate room, and when. That gap is why ABP's Port of Southampton moved to electronic keys and padlocks with audit trails, starting with a 20-padlock trial of Abloy UK's CLIQ system, according to International Security Journal.

Q: What would a deployment look like?

A: Consider an example terminal. On crane electrical rooms, technicians carry an Electronic Key that powers a Passive Lock on contact. The lock body holds no battery or capacitor and is rated from -40 °C to +80 °C at IP68, which suits salt-laden quaysides. On busy gate equipment rooms, Kinetic Locks generate their own energy when the handle turns, with the same lock-body rating. Both use AES-128 or stronger encryption and typically complete energy harvesting, authentication and unlocking within 3 seconds.

Q: What are the trade-offs?

A: Electronic Keys need charging, with at least 1,000 Passive Lock operations per full charge, and are rated from -20 °C to +55 °C at IP65. Keep spares in the control room. In return, each key stores at least 1,000 operation records offline.
